Always be willing to learn

Learning is a core part of being a web developer – of working anywhere in technology, really!

It sucks feeling like you’re on the steep side of the learning curve, but keep going! I promise it will get better.

You will get better at not only coding, but also *learning* how to learn. And you’ll be a better web developer for it.

 

Meet Deadlines

Most project you will work on will have a deadline. It’s super important to finish the work when you have agreed to finish.

This is true whether you’re a solo freelancer or working in a large company.

However, if a deadline you’ve been given is crazy unrealistic, or you fall behind midway, you must say something.

Don’t be silent and have it be a surprised to every else if you have to miss a deadline.

 

Communicate effectively

Like in our last point, communicate ASAP if meeting a deadline is in an upcoming project.

Also being able to explain technical topic to non-technical co-workers or client is a really important skill to have.

There’s some empathy involved in this – try to understand where the other person is coming from when you talk to them.

 

We’re artisans not artists.

 You may be asked to build a site in *gasp* WordPress, because that’s to help the client achieve their business objectives.

We’re artisans, not artists.

 

Be open to constructive criticism

None of us if perfect. And the fact is, we have blind spots to our own and failings.

Other people are often in a better position to identify how we need to change in order to grow professionally and personally.

If you receive good constructive criticisms, take a breath and receive it with grace, for your own self-important.

 

Help other and mentor juniors

It can be distracting to take time out of your own busy day to explain or help someone else.

 But remember – we are all where we are because of the help and support of others.

Acknowledge that gift, and pass it on to others. Your experience can help someone else who was where you used to be in the past.
