Salary expectation in interview #52
Provide A Range
If you do not feel
comfortable providing a single number, you can choose to provide a range
instead. However, keep in mind that the employer may opt for the lower part of
your range, so make sure that your target number is as close to the bottom
number as possible.
Also keep your range somewhat tight with versions ranging from $ 5000 to $ 10,000.
Example:
“I am seeking a position that pays between $75,000 and $80,000 annually.”
Include negotiation
option
In addition to
your salary, there may be other benefit, perks or forms of compensation you
consider just as valuable. An option is also to include possible opportunities
for dialogue.
For example, while
the employer may not budget enough for your ideal salary range, they may be
willing to offer equality in the company to make the compensation package more
attractive to you.
Example:
“I am seeking a
position that pays between $75,000 and $80,000 annually, but depending on
benefit, bonuses, equality, stock option and other opportunities.”
Deflect the
Question:
If you are still not early in the recruitment process and are still learning specifics about job duties and termination, you may want to avoid the question for later negotiation.
However, keep in
mind you’ll still eventually have to discuss salary expectation.
Either way, it’s
good idea to be prepared with a well-researched number in mind even if you’re
still factoring in additional information.
Useful example
Example:
“while I am certainly
fixable, I am certainly flexible. I am looking to receive between $83,000 and
$87,000 annually Due to my skill set and experience level. I think this is a
comfortable and appropriate color for my work. "
Example:
“My baseline
salary requirement is 94,500. I think the values and skills I can bring to this role support my
expectation of a comeback. Does this fit your mind? "
